To change a bulb you find the right socket, open the back of the headlight, swap the bulb and test it. On most cars it takes 10 to 20 minutes per side.
Which bulb does your car use?
The socket is printed on the old bulb and listed in the car manual. Common sockets are H7, H4 and H1, and many cars use different sockets for low beam and high beam.
What do you need?
New bulbs, clean gloves and sometimes a screwdriver. On some cars you need to remove a cover or turn the wheel to reach the back of the headlight. Check the manual first.
How do you change it, step by step?
1. Turn off the lights and the ignition. 2. Open the bonnet and find the back of the headlight. 3. Remove the rubber cover. 4. Unplug the connector. 5. Release the clip or turn the bulb to take it out. 6. Fit the new bulb without touching the glass. 7. Refit the clip, connector and cover. 8. Test the light.
What is different with LED bulbs?
LED bulbs have a heat sink and sometimes a small driver box that needs space behind the headlight. Check the depth before you buy. Some cars need a CAN bus version to avoid warning lights. Rules for LED bulbs in headlights made for halogen differ between countries.
What should you check afterwards?
Check that both sides light up, that there are no warning lights and that the beam points the right way against a wall. Change both sides at the same time so the light is even.
