You get better light by keeping the headlight lenses clear, changing old bulbs, aiming the lights correctly and keeping the windscreen clean. Most of it costs little and takes an afternoon.
Are your headlight lenses yellow or cloudy?
Plastic lenses turn yellow and cloudy over time, and that can take away a large part of the light. A restoration kit polishes the surface clear, and a UV coat afterwards keeps it clear longer.
When should you change bulbs?
Halogen bulbs get weaker with age long before they burn out. If your lights look dim, change both sides at the same time.
Are the lights aimed correctly?
Lights that point too low reach a short distance, and lights that point too high blind others. Many workshops check and adjust the aim quickly.
Is the windscreen clean on the inside?
A film on the inside of the windscreen scatters the light from oncoming cars and your own lights. Clean it regularly and change worn wiper blades.
When is it time for extra lights?
If you often drive on dark roads, extra lights give you reach and width that headlights cannot. An LED bar or driving lights connect to the high beam and switch with it.
