Yes, an LED light bar is legal on the road in the EU if it is E-approved and connected so it switches off together with your high beam. There is also a limit on how much high beam a car may have in total.
What does E-approved mean?
E-approved means the light has been tested and approved for road use under UN ECE regulations. You find the E-mark and the regulation numbers printed on the light. R10 covers electromagnetic interference, and R112 and R149 cover how the light performs on the road.
What is the reference number?
The reference number is a figure on the light that shows how strong its high beam is. In the EU, the reference numbers of all high beams on the car may add up to no more than 100. Add the numbers on your own headlights and the extra lights you plan to fit.
How must extra lights be connected?
Extra lights must work as part of the high beam. They switch on with the high beam and switch off when you dip to low beam. A relay wiring kit or a plug-in solution like XBB takes care of that.
Is an off-road light bar legal on the road?
No, a light without E-approval is only for use off public roads. Check the marking before you buy if you plan to drive with it on the road.
What about Norway and other countries?
The ECE rules apply across the EU and in Norway, but inspection practice can differ. Check with the inspection body where your car is registered if you are unsure.
